Datsun 1200 Bluebird
At the end of 1959 the 3rd generation of the small Datsun saloon was introduced, model 310. For the first time it received a real name, Bluebird. The body received a more mature styling and independent front suspension was now used.
A thorough facelift for the ‘62 model year (Model 312) brought a wider grille, and more pronounced tailfins with taller rear lights. The interior received a more upright dashboard. Around that time the first European markets were explored. Greece, Norway and Finland imported the Datsun 1200 Bluebird in small numbers.
In 1963 Julius Wikström from Kemiö, Finland, bought a Datsun Bluebird with the registration TLC-41. Mr Wikström took great care of his Bluebird and when the time came to trade it in, in 1978, it was still in a remarkably good condition. So good in fact, the dealer decided to keep it, it was repainted in the original colour and put on display in his showroom. Sadly 10 years later the dealer went bankrupt, which did give Mertsi Martellius from Hietamäki the opportunity of a lifetime. He bought the Datsun and, registered as a museum car, cherished it for more than 30 years.
After all those years it was used less and less, it was time somebody else would care for the Bluebird. We are proud to say we are the next chapter in the cars history. In 2020 the Bluebird arrived in the Netherlands to join our collection. Some light recommisioning was done, mainly overhauling the brakes, and it passed its Dutch registration and roadworthiness test with flying colours.
